Event Overview

This program was previously called 'Tell Me Now; Show Me How'

This is the first in a series of workshops designed to explore the essential features of quality language teaching. Participants will be introduced to contemporary theory (‘tell me now’), and best practice (‘show me how’). Workshop activities focus on identifying what to teach, how to teach, how to engage students, and how to keep them interested in learning the language.

Key components of the workshop include:

  • The language modes (listening; viewing; reading; speaking; writing)
  • The language metas (culture; the system of the language; how to learn language)
  • Selected aspects of second language acquisition (range and variety of meaningful chunks of text; focus on meaning making; extensive input; opportunities for output; opportunities to interact)
  • Basics of planning an activity (learning purpose; prior knowledge; teacher preparation; comprehensible input; engaging student interest; scaffolding learning; input and output tasks)
  • Engaging student interest through the use of games and opportunities to experience success
  • Meaningful activities of language practice and language use.

This workshop is recommended for all those beginning to teach in Community Language Schools.
