Benefits of a nationally recognised qualification via online learning
Shifting with the times for positive outcomes

Convenient avenues for professionals to upskill, learn and develop their careers, must evolve with the needs of the job landscape.
Now expanding the options to include online learning – adding to the existing Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) delivery of nationally recognised qualifications – AIM WA presents opportunities for individuals and organisations to develop essential leadership and management capabilities with flexibility and ease.
Introducing a new online delivery method for vocational certificates and diplomas, AIM WA Head of Registered Training Organisation Lesley Reagon FAIM said the option would cater to a broader range of participants, including those who might not yet have the workplace experience required for RPL.
“We are expanding our delivery to include a scenario-based online learning model in addition to RPL,” she said.
“The online delivery model is ideal for individuals who are seeking to develop new skills, transition into leadership roles or gain qualifications without the necessary workplace experience for RPL."
“This new approach integrates online learning resources, a simulated business environment and assessments based on practical scenarios.
“This offers participants a more traditional pathway to gaining qualifications, especially for those seeking to upskill or who don’t yet meet the experience requirements for RPL.”
The established RPL approach
An AIM WA RPL qualification is a task-based assessment pathway, which recognises the existing knowledge and skills professionals already have.
It allows individuals to be assessed on their current skills and to only study the additional skills required, saving time and money on a regular mainstream course.
Ms Reagon said this approach suited professionals with previous experience in their chosen qualifications.
“This RPL method allows participants to demonstrate their competence by providing workplace evidence, answering knowledge questions and outlining processes they follow in their roles,” she said.
“It is a flexible self-paced assessment method tailored to professionals with a minimum of two years’ experience, enabling them to gain formal recognition for their skills without additional training.”
The new online learning approach
AIM WA’s new online learning model removes the need for prior experience, opening the door to a wider range of participants.
Regardless of current skill level or professional experience, everyone - from seasoned professionals needing formal recognition of skills to newcomers and career changers - is eligible.
According to Ms Reagon, AIM WA introduced the online learning option to provide flexible pathways for everyone to gain nationally recognised qualifications.
“This addition ensures AIM WA can provide pathways for upskilling and professional development while still maintaining our focus on RPL for experienced professionals,” she said.
“Participants in the new model will engage with online learning materials and assessments based on workplace scenarios.
“Unlike the RPL approach, which assesses existing skills and knowledge, the new method provides structured training, enabling learners to develop new competencies through guided learning.
“It suits those who are not yet fully competent in the required areas or prefer a more traditional learning experience.”
The benefits of online learning
This online learning presents benefits for both individual learners and their organisations.
“The new learning option provides flexibility, allowing participants to learn at their own pace while balancing work and other commitments,” Ms Reagon said.
“It also offers access to a comprehensive suite of resources and simulated real-world scenarios, ensuring learners are well prepared to apply their knowledge in the workplace.
“Online courses will further demonstrate advantages for organisations to upskill existing employees and enable them to take on additional responsibilities.
“Organisations can benefit from a more tailored learning solution that supports workforce development.
“The scenario-based assessments and practical learning equip employees with up-to-date skills, enabling companies to address current and future skill gaps.”
The future of online learning
Keeping pace with a shifting job market, online learning options should not stay stagnant.
According to Ms Reagon, online learning will continue to evolve as new technologies emerge and learner needs shift.
She said AIM WA would continue to adapt learning programs to suit the needs of participants.
“AIM WA is committed to adapting and expanding its offerings, ensuring our delivery models remain innovative and aligned with industry needs,” Ms Reagon said.
“We foresee further enhancements, particularly around personalised learning experiences and integrating advanced technologies into our programs.
“By introducing this online learning model to the existing RPL option, AIM WA is expanding access to nationally recognised qualifications, providing more opportunities for individuals and organisations to develop essential leadership and management capabilities.”
