Corruption and Crime Commissioner, Hon John McKechnie AO, KC
John is a distinguished and highly respected figure in the Australian legal system, whose lifelong commitment to justice, education and public service has left a significant imprint on both the judiciary and the broader legal community.
Appointed as the Commissioner of the Corruption and Crime Commission in April 2015 and reappointed for a further five-year term in June 2022, John brought a formidable legacy of legal expertise and leadership. Prior to his appointment, he served as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia for 16 years, including three years as the Senior Judge of the General Division, where his considered and compassionate approach to the law earned him widespread recognition.
John was also the first-ever Director of Public Prosecutions for Western Australia. A passionate educator and mentor, he has dedicated over three decades to teaching trial advocacy and currently serves as the course leader at Murdoch University, where his students benefit from his personable, engaging teaching style.
He has contributed to the development of judicial education at the national level, having been actively involved with the National Judicial College of Australia for over 10 years, and is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law.
John's enduring commitment to public service and education is driven by a strong belief in justice, ethical leadership and the pursuit of excellence in the service of the community.
